With rains subsiding and waters receding, the administration has rushed medical and relief teams to prevent any outbreak of epidemic in the flood-affected villages of central and north Gujarat, which bore the brunt of heavy downpour in the last couple of days.
"About 200 medical teams are currenly working in talukas of Sabarkantha district, which has been badly-affected in rains since the last few days," said M Thennarasan, collector of the north Gujarat district.
He said the villages in five talukas of Bayad, Bhilod Himmatnagar, Dhansura and Prantej were badly hit.
"Over 500 houses have collapsed in these talukas," Thennarasan said adding, the administration was conducting a survey of the flood-affected areas, where relief material had been rushed.
Teams have been deployed to clean up the towns and villages inundated with floodwaters, he added. The Sabarkantha Collector said the situation in Bayad taluka, which received about 264 mm rains, was grim.
Similar teams have been operating in central Gujarat districts like Ahmedabad where Army personnel were deployed to evacuate stranded persons on Tuesday.
"Over 20 medical and relief teams are presently operating in Dascroi and Dholka talukas of Ahmedabad where over 175 kaccha houses collapsed when water entered in the villages," said D Thara, Ahmedabad district collector.
"We are distributing tents to those who have lost their houses in the floods," she said.
"The villages badly affected by the floods are being cleaned up using machines to prevent outbreak of any disease and food packets are being distributed to over 2,500 affected persons," the collector said.
The district administration is carrying out chlorination and spraying of disinfectants in these villages, she added.
Relief work is also being carried out in neigbouring Kheda district where about 5,400 persons were evacuated on Tuesday.
According to the Kheda district administration, several villages in Matar taluka are still inaccessible after waters from Vatrak and Sabarmati rivers inundated the region.
About 25,000 food packets are being prepared by NGOs and religous organisations for distribution, official sources said.
Medical teams have also been deployed in Anand, Patan, Surendranagar and Mehsana districts.
Meanwhile, in Vadodara district there was a general alert in 18 villages of Savli, Padra and Vadodara talukas as the Kadana and Wanakbori dams built over the Mahisagar river were still overflowing.
