Gudiya, who was 'reunited' with her prisoner of war husband in September 2004 after remarrying another man and carrying his child, died in Delhi on Monday morning after a protracted illness.

Gudiya had been ailing for the past few months and breathed her last at the Army Research and Referral Hospital due to 'acute shortage of haemoglobin', official sources said.

Earlier, she was admitted to Military Hospital in October after she delivered a still-born child and was shifted to Delhi about two weeks back for advanced treatment, they said.

Gudiya returns to first husband, keeps child

Gudiya's case came into focus when her husband, Mohammad Arif, returned in 2004 after five years as a prisoner of war in Pakistan to find her living with a second husband and expectant.

Arif was married to Gudiya for a very short period when he was called for active service in the Kargil sector.

She married one Taufiq from Pataudi village in Gurgaon, Uttar Pradesh, when Arif was presumed dead after being reported missing by the Army on September 19, 1999, during the Kargil incursions.

The 18 Engineer Regiment jawan was freed from a Pakistan jail on August nine and returned via the Wagah border the same day.

Despite an appeal from Taufiq, the village council permitted Gudiya to stay with her first husband.

Meanwhile, Gudiya's body will be cremated at her native Mundali village about 30 km from Meerut.
