With growing attacks by United Liberation Front of Asom days ahead of the launch of the National Games, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi and briefed him on the law and order situation.

Gogoi also briefed the prime minister on the security measures being undertaken by the state government to ensure the peaceful holding of the 33rd National Games starting in Guwahati from February nine.

The Chief Minister also met Home Minister Shivraj Patil and discussed the security situation in the state which has been witnessing a spate of violence perpetrated by the ULFA primarily targetting the non-Assamese people.

During his meeting with the prime minister, Gogoi is understood to have thanked the Centre for the prompt response to the recent attacks.

Singh is scheduled to attend the closing ceremony of the Games on February 18. The prime minister had recently visited Tinsukia and other affected areas of Assam after the ULFA killed over 70 people, mostly labourers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Gogoi also urged Singh sanction a special development programme to enhance employment and develop tourism as well as the vast riverine (char) areas on the Brahmaputra.

The prime minister has assured consideration, a state government spokesman said. The Games are slated to be launched by UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi on February 9.

On Tuesday, the ULFA has warned the premier Northeast Television channel would have to wind up its operations in Assam if it failed to prove its report that the banned outfit had taken money from the government to withdraw its call to boycott the National Games.
