Germany's entry into WC final foils Modi-Merkel meet

July 09, 2014 20:32 IST

There will not be any meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is travelling to Brazil to watch her team play in FIFA World Cup final, during Modi's transit halt in Germany on July 13 en route to Brazil for the BRICS Summit.

The German Chancellor is travelling to Brazil to watch her team play on Sunday night and an announcement to this effect was made by German President Joachim Gauck's office on Wednesday, which said both him and Merkel

would travel to Brazil for the final.

With Merkel out on the day when Modi will be in Germany for his transit, there will not be any meeting as the Prime Minister will not like to have bilateral talks with anyone other than the German Chancellor.

Sunday's match will be Merkel's second at this World Cup. The Chancellor was in the stands for Germany's opening match against Portugal last month, which coach Joachim Loew's team won 4-0.

Germany qualified for the final of the World Cup by demolishing hosts Brazil 7-1 in the semi-final.
