August 12, 2004 20:04 IST

In a step towards providing transparency and accountability in administration, the government on Thursday sought comments from the general public on the draft rules of 'The Freedom of information Act, 2002', enacted by the National Democratic Alliance government in 2003.

According to a notification of the ministry of personnel, Section 17 of the Act provides that the central government shall make rules to carry out the provisions of the Act, which provides freedom to every citizen to secure access to information under the control of public authorities.

Citizens or groups desirous of making suggestions on the draft rules, formulated by the personnel ministry, should write to the Under Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Training by August 31.
