Controversial former IPS officer Hasan Gafoor, who was Mumbai Police Commissioner during the 26/11 terror attacks, on Monday died of a massive cardiac arrest.
61-year-old Gafoor was not keeping well for the past two days, a police officer said adding "he suffered a massive heart attack at home. Gafoor died when he was being taken to the Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai."
Gafoor had courted controversy when he accused some senior police officers of neglecting duty during the three-day siege by the Pakistani terrorists. The government had sought an explanation from him for the remarks which appeared in a news magazine.
Gafoor had also received flak from the Ram Pradhan Committee which probed how the security agencies responded to the deadly terror strikes, that claimed 166 lives, and found fault with his leadership during the crisis.
Gafoor, who was known as an expert having immense knowledge about firearms, was director general of police of Maharashtra (Anti Corruption bureau) when he retired from the service in December, 2010.
CBI had recently begun an in-house probe into pay-off allegations concerning a USD 100 million Air India contract in 2007 when Praful Patel was civil aviation minister and in which case Gafoor's name was also dragged.
