Former Maharashtra Home Minister and senior Nationalist Congress Party leader R R Patil is undergoing treatment for cancer at Lilavati Hospital and is responding well to chemotherapy, hospital authorities said on Monday.

"His condition is stable and he is improving. There is no need to worry. He is undergoing treatment for cancer. The radiation has been done and chemotherapy treatment is being given. He is responding well to chemotherapy," a hospital spokesman said in a statement.

The 57-year-old leader has been undergoing treatment at the Bandra hospital for the last few days sparking speculation about his health especially after the nature of his ailment was kept under wraps.

Earlier in the day, NCP sources had said that the leader is being treated for a condition related to the heart for which he had undergone a successful angiography at Bombay Hospital last month.

According to them, he was also taking medication for an oral condition at another hospital in the suburbs.

Patil has already undergone a surgery for an oral condition at Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai.
