Earthquake measuring 7.6 rocks Mexico

An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale hit Mexico post midnight IST.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicentre of the quake was Guerrero region, located 186 kilometres from Acapulco city.

The National Seismological Survey is Mexico said the quake had an epicentre southwest of Ometepec and occurred 10 kilometres underground.

There were reports that frightened workers spilled out of swaying buildings in Mexico City. Video showed residents gathering in open spaces away from buildings.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the inland earthquake would not generate a destructive widespread tsunami, but there was the possibility of some local tsunami effects.
