July 15, 2014 18:49 IST

Sleuths from the Narcotics Control Bureau on Tuesday seized contraband drug worth over Rs 27.5 lakh in two separate operations carried out in Guwahati and arrested a total of 5 people, including 3 from Manipur.

A NCB official said that 3 people travelling in a Maruti Alto were intercepted near Jorabat and about 1.5 kilogram of heroin worth Rs 25 lakh was seized. According to the officials, the three -- identified as Anowar Khan, Musarif Khan and Faijur Rahman -- were trying to bring the contraband into the city from Manipur.

The official added that in another operation, NCB sleuths seized about 3.2 kg worth of opium, worth Rs 2.5 lakh, from two people who were travelling on a bike. The two -- Ahsan Ali and Saifuddin Ahmed – hail from Barpeta district in Assam.

The seized opium was sourced from Manipur, which shares a long border with Myanmar where international drug rackets are suspected to be operating from.
