Farhan Azmi released, to reach Mumbai on Tue

December 02, 2003 18:00 IST

Farhan Azmi, the son of Samajwadi Party MP, Abu Asim Azmi, detained by the Dubai police for 37 days on alleged drug charges, was released on Tuesday morning, family sources said.

Farhan was detained with three other socialite friends from Mumbai, of whom two have already been released. Farhan is scheduled to reach Mumbai on Tuesday evening.

Azmi has denied reports that his son tested positive for drugs. "My son has been permitted to return after prosecutors found him innocent," Azmi claimed in a statement, although he expressed fear that the Mumbai police might pick up his son for questioning after he reaches Mumbai.

Farhan, who is a hotelier, was arrested in Dubai along with Bonnie Chhabria, son of automobile designer Dilip Chhabria, Shaan Sippy, grandson of filmmaker, G P Sippy, and one Pramod Dandekar.

Bonnie Chhabria was the first to be released after he tested negative, followed by Shaan Sippy.

The fate of Dandekar is still not known.
