February 08, 2014 22:11 IST

A local court on Saturday issued an arrest warrant against former Jammu and Kashmir junior health minister Shabir Ahmad Khan allegedly involved in sexual assault on a doctor in Srinagar.

Khan had submitted his resignation on Friday which was accepted by Governor N N Vohra.

A senior police officer said a police team is being despatched to Jammu to arrest the former minister.

The police obtained an arrest warrant against the ex-minister from the chief judicial magistrate in Srinagar on Saturday.

The FIR in the matter had also been lodged on the direction of the CJM. The complainant had alleged that police had refused to lodge an FIR against the minister.

The Doctors Association Kashmir on Saturday staged protests in capital Srinagar demanding immediate arrest of the former minister and exemplary punishment to him.

Work in government hospitals was affected because of the one day strike called by the DAK.
