Discussion on 2G scam will have no outcome: BJP

January 02, 2011 15:03 IST

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday justified its demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the 2G spectrum scam, saying just holding discussions in Parliament on the issue would have no outcome as it happened in the case of price rise.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj asked the government to spell out the outcomes of the debates Parliament had on issues like price rise.

"The government blames Opposition for not discussing the issue of JPC in the House. I would like to ask the government that we have discussed issue of price rise, not once, not twice, but 10 times during United Progressive Alliance rule. The common man is suffering and the government has turned a blind eye and deaf ear. What is the outcome of those discussions? " she tweeted.

BJP and other Opposition parties have been demanding a JPC probe into the 2G spectrum scam, but the government says there is no need for such a probe.

The Oppostion had last year sought to corner the government on the issue of price rise in Parliament and had also held rallies across the country. A cut motion was also moved on petroleum prices in early last year. It was, however, defeated in Lok Sabha.

The opposition leaders have threatened to stall the proceedings in the coming Budget session, expected to start in the third week of February, if the JPC demand was not met.

BJP and other opposition parties insist that the Public Accounts Committee, which is already examining the 2G issue, does not have the powers to fully investigate alleged scam and a JPC should be constituted.
