Dey murder: Chhota Rajan aide arrested

Last updated on: July 03, 2011 15:15 IST

A person suspected to be involved in the killing of senior crime reporter Jyotirmoy Dey has been picked up for questioning, police said today. "Vinod Chembur, the person who is suspected to have helped the shooters identify Dey, has been picked up for questioning.

We have a reason to believe that he may have played a key role in the murder," said a senior police official. "If required, we will arrest him if we establish his complicity sufficiently or he may be let off," he added.

None of the senior officials from the city police's crime branch, including Joint Commissioner of police (Crime) Himanshu Roy and Additional Commissioner of police  (Crime) Deven Bharti, were available for comment.

Seven persons, including the shooter who allegedly shot dead Dey from point blank range in suburban Powai on June 11 were arrested by the crime branch last week. The police claimed the murder was carried out at the behest of fugitive don Chhota Rajan, though they have been tight-lipped about the motive behind the killing.
