Detained and humiliated by cops, claims wife of accused

March 14, 2013 20:06 IST

The wife of one of the arrested accused in Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arun Jaitley phone tapping case on Thursday told a Delhi court that she was ‘humiliated and abused’ by the police while she was being ‘illegally detained’ by them in the absence of any woman officer.

A day after the issue of alleged illegal detention of Monica, wife of accused Neeraj Nayyar who is a private detective and has been arrested in phone tapping case, was raised his counsel before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjay Bansal, the woman on Thursday appeared in the court along with her four-month-old child to narrate her ordeal.

During the hearing, Monica alleged that officials of special cell of Delhi police had called her to their office on March 12 and she was ‘illegally’ kept in the lock up for the whole night. The court, however, after hearing her brief submissions, asked her to move an appropriate complaint before it regarding her allegations against the police.

"In my view, it would be appropriate that she (woman) should file an appropriate complaint if she wants to prosecute any official. It should not be limited to detention only," the CMM said.

The woman had come to the court to record her statement in the matter but the court insisted on her filing a detailed complaint in the matter.

The court also granted three days' time to the concerned deputy commissioner of police of the special cell to file the response on the alleged ‘illegal detention of Neeraj's wife.

The court, which had on Wednesday asked the DCP to file its response by today, posted the matter for March 18 after the investigating officer of the case submitted that the DCP has sought three days time to submit the report.

Neeraj's counsel and the woman told the judge that ‘the special cell officials had called her to their office at  1 am in the night (on March 12) and had kept her in the lockup for the whole night and she was released on Wednesday evening after the matter was reported to the court’.

She alleged that she was detained there in the absence of any lady officer and she was also ‘humiliated and abused by the officials in front of several other staff’.
