May 18, 2007 09:19 IST

Shiromani Akali Dal president Ravi Inder Singh on Friday demanded President's Rule in Punjab.

In a statement issued in Jalandhar on Friday, the SAD president said that the Prakash Singh Badal government had failed to control the law and order situation in the state arising out of the Dera Sacha Sauda controversy.

He said to control the deteriorating law and order situation in time and to further avoid 1978-like situation in the state when there were clashes between Nirankari and Sikh activists, it was better to implement President's Rule in the state.

''Had the central government in 1978 implemented the President's Rule in time, the disturbances in Punjab could have been avoided,'' he said.
