The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday filed the first case in the alleged Denel defence scam.

The CBI was asked by the ministry of defence to conduct a probe into the previous National Democratic Alliance government's deals with South Africa's state-owned firm Denel.

The agency, which scrutinised the papers submitted by the Ministry of Defence, filed the FIR against "unnamed people", official sources said.

The agency had sent back the defence ministry's request saying it needed a specific complaint for the probe along with a notification so that the agency could examine and find out whether a case was made out for investigation.

The documents handed over to the agency included a file pertaining to purchase of anti-material rifles, on which the then defence minister George Fernandes had raised some queries and later approved the contract, said the sources.

The Denel deal clinched in 2003 recently triggered a political storm following allegation that Denel had paid money to a British agent Varsa Associates in the Isle of Man to secure Indian army's contract for arms and ammunition.

The government has also handed to CBI over 37 cases of other defence deals, including the casket purchase during
Kargil conflict, entered into during NDA rule. However, no case has been registered so far in connection with them.
