Most parts of Delhi and adjoining areas went without power for about six hours early on Monday when a major transmission line tripped disrupting essential services including rail movement.
"First, the Hisar-Dadri 440 KV transmission line tripped at 0340 hours, then the Hissar-Bawana transmission line. This caused problems in transmission of electricity from Badarpur thermal and Indraprastha gas power plants," National Thermal Power Corporation Director (Operations) B N Ojha said.
A number of trains in northern India, especially Punjab and Haryana, got stranded at various points and almost all incoming trains to Delhi were delayed by 90 to 120 minutes following the power breakdown, a Northern Railway spokesman said.
As many as 12 express and mail trains and 20 freight trains were stranded at various places between Delhi- Saharanpur and Panipat-Ambala sections, he said.
When contacted Power Grid Corporation Chairman R P Singh said rail movement was affected only for half an hour due to electricity failure, and further delay was caused by fog.
Power was restored in most parts of Delhi within six hours, Singh said, adding, at around 1030 hours (IST) Delhi was drawing 1500 MW as against the required1800 MW. The transmission line tripped mainly due to fog and pollution causing problems in transmission, Singh said, adding that "it caused only minor problems and there was no major fault."
