In a case of road rage, a person was beaten to death by occupants of a car in front his children after their vehicles collided in central Delhi's Turkman gate area on Sunday night leading to widespread protests in and around the area on Monday.

The incident took place around 11.30 pm when the victim, identified as Shahnawaz (38), was returning home from a wedding on his motorcycle along with his two children Fahad (13) and Kaif (9).

As they reached Turkman gate, the bike hit a i-20 car, which had five occupants, police said.

An argument ensued between the occupants of the car and the motorcyclist which soon took an ugly turn with Shahnawaz beaten up badly. He was later taken to the nearest hospital where he was declared dead, police said.

“The case is of road rage but personal enmity is being probed. One of the accused, Waseem (24), has been arrested. All of them have been identified and are locals of the same area. Allegations of locals against police are also being 'looked at',” he said.

Both the children, who were witness to the incident, are said to be in a state of shock. The victim, who owned an electronics shop at Mata Sundari Road, is survived by his wife and another daughter named Talbia (5).

Soon after the incident, tension prevailed in the area as locals protested alleged police inaction. Protests during the day resulted in traffic jam in Central Delhi from LNJP to Turkman Gate.

Heavy police deployment was made in the area and some people have been detained.

“We have registered a case of murder and investigations are on. We are examining CCTVs installed in the area to identify the assailants,” said a senior police official.
