A day after a driver of the Delhi Transport Corporation was beaten to death, allegedly by a biker in a case of road rage, drivers of the state-run bus service have called a strike, causing problems for thousands of commuters and schoolchildren.
Ashok Kumar, 42, died on Sunday morning after Vijay, a young man whose bike he had grazed, climbed onto his bus and allegedly bludgeoned him with his helmet. The biker was later arrested from Mundka in a case of road rage.
Protesting the lack of security, the DTC drivers and conductors said that they will not allow buses to ply until victim’s family is given a compensation of Rs 1 crore and a family member is given a permanent job in DTC.
“We will be on strike on Monday. DTC buses will not run as workers are angry due to incident and are not certain about their security. We have put three demands before the government. A) Rs 1 crore compensation for victim, B) permanent job for victim’s family member, C) security assurance for all workers. If all demands are met, all drivers will return to work,” Tara Chand, general secretary, DTC Bus Association, said.
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party government announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victim's family and has also said it will offer a job to his family member.
