May 25, 2006 21:16 IST

Nine persons, accused in a case relating to the death of Mohammed Rafiq Abdul Gani, who was burnt alive in a car during violence in May 2006, surrendered before Gujarat police on Thursday.

The nine were later taken into custody, officials said, adding that they will be presented in the court on Friday.

With this the number of those arrested in this case rose to ten while four others are still absconding, Kaushik Pandya, police inspector, told PTI.

A mob had on May 2, 2006, set ablaze a car burning alive the youth at Arjuwa road during the riots in the city after the Vadodara civic authorities, engaged in removing encroachments, demolished a 200-year-old dargah.

However, there are different versions how the youth's vehicle had caught fire. Relatives of the victim allege the vehicle was set afire by a mob comprising members of the majority community while residents of the area claim the vehicle had overturned and caught fire after dashing into a road divider.
