Communist Party of India general secretary A B Bardhan on Sunday said the United Progressive Alliance government at the centre was in a period of transition and his party's aim was to find an alternative to it.
Addressing the two-day party's state council meeting in Jaipur, he said the CPI, which is extending outside support to the UPA government, and other secular parties would come together and strive to form the proposed alternative front.
He said it was the responsibility of the Communist parties to form the alternative front.
The CPI was supporting the UPA government due to political challenges and compulsions, he said.
He said the CPI strongly opposed the capitalist policies of the UPA government. The party would struggle for the implementation of the Common Minimum Programme, as agreed at the time of the formation of the Manmohan Singh government.
If required, his party would seek people's support for the implementation of the CMP, he said.
