Court rejects plea for CBI probe into NC worker's death

An anti-corruption court on Tuesday rejected the plea of the family of the ruling National Conference activist Sayeed Mohammad Yusuf, who allegedly died in police custody on September 30, for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe.

The family had moved the court seeking a CBI probe into the death of the NC activist Yusuf.

Yusuf, a prominent NC activist from south Kashmir had died under 'mysterious circumstances' after having a meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who had handed him over to the state crime branch for investigation in a bribery case for the berth of a minister and an MLC.

The court also did not grant the plea of the relatives for registration of a criminal case into the alleged custodial death.

Last week Omar Abdullah urged Union Law Minister Salman Khursheed to suggest a name of a retired Supreme Court judge for appointment as a commission to conduct a judicial enquiry into the of death of the ruling National Conference party worker.   

The development came in the wake of the inability conveyed to the state government by the state high court to spare a sitting judge for the inquiry.
