Cops tell Team Anna not to make provocative speeches

July 29, 2012 20:45 IST

Delhi Police on Sunday "requested" Team Anna to ensure that speakers at their protest site do not make any "provocative" speeches so that law and order situation in the capital is not disturbed.

A senior police official also dismissed allegations by some speakers that security personnel misbehaved with women while they were protesting outside Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's residence on Saturday.

"These allegations were false and we have advised Team Anna leaders to ensure that such provocative speeches were not made from the dais which could affect law and order situation," he said.

At the venue, Team Anna member Kumar Vishwas claimed that authorities have sent him a notice asking him not to make any provocative speech from the dais.

However, Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said no letter has been send to Vishwas. "We have sent a request to Neeraj of Team Anna requesting him to ensure that no provocative speeches are made from the dais. It is not a notice. It is only a request letter," he said.

In the letter to Team Anna, police said around 100 supporters had protested outside the prime minister's residence and threw water bottles, lumps of coals, currency notes and coins inside the premises.

"They were very aggressive and could be removed from there only after great difficulty. It has also been noticed that Vishwas, a key functionary of India Against Corruption, made provocative speech against police from the dais...

"Such speeches based on unverified facts are likely to inflame passions of the crowd and incite them to commit some unlawful act which may be prejudicial to law and order and harmony among the society," the letter said.

It also said that there were also reports that some senior functionaries have briefed media that snap demonstrations at the houses of offices and residences of prime minister, home ministers and others will continue.

Police have increased security presence outside the houses of the prime minister, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi and the ministers, whom Team Anna has accused of corruption.

The letter also noted that Team Anna has given an undertaking to abide by terms and conditions laid by Supreme Court.

"Such incidents are a clear violation of these terms and conditions by the supporters of India Against Corruption. You are therefore advised to direct the supporters not to violate the terms and conditions.

"Moreover, the speakers may be directed not to deliver inflammatory or such speeches which are based on unverified facts," the letter said.
