Cops in Bihar's Maoists districts to get insurance cover

The Bihar Police has decided to provide group insurance cover to more than 44,000 policemen deployed in sixteen Maoist-affected districts in the state, officials said on Monday.

“The police headquarters has invited proposals from insurance companies to provide cover for policemen,” an official said.

He said that insurance cover for police officers would be provided from the financial year 2013-14.

The insurance cover will be for 12 months for policemen from the Bihar Military Police, Homeguard, Special Task Force, Central Reserve Police Force and Special Auxiliary Police, deployed in Maoist affected districts.

A total of 44,731 police officials in Maoist-affected districts of Patna, Nalanda, Gaya, Aurangabad, Rohtas, Kaimur, Bhojpur, Nawada, Jehanabad, Arwal, Jamui, Munger, Motihari, and Sitamarhi will be provided insurance cover, another police official said.

Besides the insurance cover, the kin of a police personnel killed in Maoist violence will receive Rs 20 lakh compensation.

The state government has also raised the compensation in case of death in 22 security related expenditure districts in Maoists violence from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh.
