A Delhi police head constable was injured after he was dragged by a speeding car when he tried to stop it at a picket in east Delhi on Monday. His colleagues waiting in a PCR van nearby caught up with the vehicle and arrested the driver.

Constable Yogesh Kumar was posted near New Ashok Nagar when they noticed a car with tinted glasses around 1 am.

Recounting the incident, Yogesh’s colleague said, “We noticed the car and signalled the driver to slow down near the checkpost. But just as Yogesh headed to the car, he sped away. Yogesh was hit by the car and he landed on the bonnet. He managed to cling on to the wipers and save his life.”

After being dragged for a few metres, Yogesh managed to climb on to the bonnet and tried to stop the driver. Eyewitnesses said that instead of stopping the car, the driver made a sharp U-turn to take the road towards Noida.

“The driver drove in a zig-zag manner for about 300 metres so that the cop loses his balance but he was caught by a police patrol van from the opposite direction,” an eyewitness said.

The driver, identified as Nitin Mohan Lal, tried to dodge the police but was chased and arrested. A case has been registered against him at the New Ashok Nagar police station.
