The women’s commission in Assam has registered a case against senior Congress leader and former Lok Sabha member Kirip Chaliha for making derogatory comments against a woman IPS officer on a Guwahati-based private television channel
The Assam State Women’s Commission, in its complaint, said that the former MP, who is known to have sided with a group of dissident Congress legislators, commented that Jorhat Superintendent of Police Sanjukta Parashar’s ‘unusual proximity’ with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was a cause for concern.
Gogoi had earlier condemned the Congress leader’s derogatory comments on the personal integrity of a woman police officer and asked state women’s commission to register a case in this regard.
Dissident Congress leaders have targeted the woman police officer after Jorhat district police launched a manhunt to nab Congress MLA from Mariani constituency, Rupjyoti Kurmi on charges of assaulting a police constable.
The dissident MLAs and a few anti-Gogoi leaders in the Congress have tried to mount pressure on the government to avoid Kurmi’s arrest. They even warned the All India Congress Committee that 30 legislators would resign if Kurmi is arrested.
