March 01, 2012 17:38 IST

Nineteen members of Legislative Assembly of opposition Congress in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on Thursday gave a notice for a no confidence motion against Speaker Ganpat Vasava following a ruling against Opposition Leader Shaktisinh Gohil.

"Nineteen MLAs of our party have demanded no confidence motion against the assembly speaker," Congress chief whip Iqbal Sheikh said.

As per the rules, no confidence notice against Speaker has to be taken in the House in 14 days of it being filed.

In 182-member Assembly, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has 123 MLAs, Congress 53, Nationalist Congress Party 3, Janata Dal-United 1 and 2 are Independent members.

Earlier, ruling BJP MLAs created an uproar in the House demanding apology from Gohil over the remarks made by him on Wednesday.

Gohil had said Gujarat government was 'working in collusion' with Adani Group during the question and answer session on the floor of House.

However, the Speaker overruled Gohil's remarks after verification of records saying that passing personal remarks was not permissible in the House as per rules and asked the opposition leader to tender an apology.

However, Gohil refused to tender an apology claiming that he never made any personal remarks against anybody in the House and requested a three-member committee to verify the records and take a decision.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dileep Sanghani later claimed in the House that Gohil passed a personal remark against him and should apologise to the House for it.
