Embarrassed Cong summons 2 Telangana MLAs to Delhi

February 16, 2010 19:35 IST

Apparently embarrassed by the resignation of two party Members of Legislative Assembly from Telangana to protest the Terms of Reference of the Sri Krishna committee, the Congress high command has summoned the two legislators to Delhi for talks.

R Damodar Reddy and Ch Mutyam Reddy left for the national capital on Tuesday to hold talks with Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily, in-charge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh, and other leaders.

"The ToR met with opposition and protests in Telangana region. We submitted resignations to the Speaker as per the promise made by us. Our in-charge Veerappa Moily on Monday asked us to come to Delhi for talks to discuss the issue," said Damodar Reddy.

Interestingly, Praja Rajyam MLA from Telangana region A Maheshwar Reddy, who also submitted his resignation, has also been asked by the Congress high command to come to Delhi.

"It is the Centre that has to give Telangana. They asked me to come for talks. I will see what they have to say on our demands regarding the terms of reference. I will not compromise on the Telangana demand," he said.

Rejecting the terms of reference of the Sri Krishna committee, the all-party JAC asked the legislators from all parties to quit their posts to mount pressure on the Centre for taking immediate steps for the formation of Telangana.

Accordingly, 15 MLAs -- 10 from Telangana Rashtra Samiti, two from Congress, one each from Telugu Desam Party, Bharatiya Janata Party and Praja Rajyam -- submitted their resignations to the Speaker, who accepted the resignations of 10 TRS MLAs and one TDP MLA.

The TDP, however, asked the Congress legislators to quit first to pile up pressure on the Centre.
