Over 30 persons including 10 policemen were injured following clashes between migrant labourers and auto rickshaw drivers in Diamond Nagar area of Kamrej taluka on Monday, police said.
Over 100 persons have been detained following the clashes where the police fired three rounds in the air and fire over 40 tear gas shell to disperse the crowd, which had become uncontrollable, they said.
According to the police, over 1500 people belonging to two groups of migrant labourers and auto rickshaw drivers had come out on the road after altercation over a petty issue.
The altercation transformed into a brawl and then into clashes after people from both the groups attacked each other with sharp weapons and sticks, they said.
During stone pelting by the two groups some policemen who had gone to control the situation were also hurt.
The crowd had damaged a police vehicle, an ambulance, burnt an auto rickshaw and a motorcycle, police added.
Over 30 persons injured in the incident have been shifted to local hospital in Kamrej, while those with grievous injuries have been referred to Surat municipal hospital, they said.
Over 100 people have been detained for the incident and are being interrogated, police added.
