Clashes continue in Srinagar on third day

June 13, 2010 18:12 IST

Srinagar continued to be on the boil for the third day with protestor-security force clashes rocking it even as strict curfew-like restrictions remained in force in the old city on Sunday.

The violence was triggered after the death of a 17-year-old student on Friday after he was allegedly hit by a tear smoke shell in the Rajouri Kadal area of Srinagar.

Protestors Sunday clashed with police and paramilitary central reserve police force troopers, both in old city and uptown areas.

Security forces used tear smoke and baton charges to disperse the protestors, who were shouting slogans and pelting stones.

In the last two days, over 60 people including security men and protestors have been injured in the clashes.

The condition of Rafiq Bangroo, 26, who was allegedly hit in the head with a gun butt by the Central Reserve Police Force troopers in the Noorbagh locality of the capital city on Saturday afternoon, continues to remain very critical.

He was operated upon by a team of doctors at the medical institute here last evening.

Security in the entire city is tight and no movement is being allowed in the old city where strict curfew-like- restrictions are in force.

Life in the city continued to remain paralysed in view of prevailing tension and clashes.
