CID to probe Sainthia train mishap

July 20, 2010 19:45 IST

The Central Investigation Department will conduct a probe into Monday's train tragedy at Sainthia in West Bengal which left 66 people dead and 89 injured.

"The CID will inquire into the accident," Director General of Police Bhupinder Singh told journalists in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Singh said the victims were mostly residents outside the state and it was not possible for the state police to go to distant places, as they did not have the necessary wherewithal.

Singh said an injured passenger of Vananchal Express had filed a FIR with the Sainthia police station.

He said the police have registered a case under IPC sections 279 (rash driving), 337 and 338 (causing hurt/grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 427 (mischief causing damage) and 304 (a) (causing death by negligence).

To a query, he said there was no time-frame and the terms of reference were to mainly see whether there was any negligence which invoked criminal action.

He also said that there was no evidence of any sabotage.
