Chidambaram to chair meeting on Valley security

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram will chair a high level meeting in Srinagar on Sunday to review the overall situation in the Kashmir Valley where the over four month long unrest has claimed 111 lives.

Chidambaram, who will arrive in Srinagar from Kargil town, will also visit north Kashmir's Baramulla town on Sunday.

He will later chair a meeting of the unified headquarters in Srinagar to be attended by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, top civil, army, paramilitary, police and intelligence officers.

The visit assumes significance as it comes close on the heels of the visit of three interlocutors nominated by the Centre. The interlocutors – eminent journalist Dilip Padgaonkar, academician Radha Kumar and information commissioner M M Ansari visited Kashmir Valley early this week and held talks with various sections of the society.

Chidambaram arrived in Leh town on Saturday on a day-long visit to review the reconstruction work in the town which was hit by series of cloud bursts and mudslides in August this year.

Large scale destruction of life and property was caused in the town due to the cloud bursts. The Central government has assured all help for the rehabilitation of those affected by the tragedy.
