Centre is to allocate Rs 1,000 crore for Tamil Nadu from the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana to lay roads in interiors of more than 1,000 kms connecting villages to main towns.
The Empowered Committee which is meeting on Thursday, where the secretary, Union ministry of rural development, will hold discussions with the senior officials of the government of Tamil Nadu to identify and estimate the distance and calculate the cost factor.
Insiders say that the grant may be approximately Rs 1,000 crore.
Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh has been addressing letters to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha on this subject.
In his three correspondences, he has appealed for a better coordination between the state governments and the Centre.
Jairam Ramesh is the only Union minister who addressed a letter in 2011 soon after the All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam returned to power in Tamil Nadu.
Generally Union ministers in UPA II government avoided sending official communication to Jayalalithaa after her comments over Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Finance Minister P Chidambaram were not found to be in good taste.
With the passage of time and initiatives taken by Jairam Ramesh, the tension is now being eased out.
