The Anti-Corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation is carrying out raids at 10 places in New Delhi, Goa, Trivandrum and Chennai to unearth fraud in the purchase of substandard gynaecological equipment by various hospitals in the country.
In New Delhi, raids are being carried out at the residences and offices of Dr Sudha Salhan of the Safdarjung Hospital and Dr Uma Goel from the Lady Hardinge Hospital. Raids are also being conducted at Nestor Pharma, a pharmaceutical company in the city's Barakhamba Road area.
CBI spokesman G Mohanty told rediff.com that Dr Salhan and Dr Goel were appointed as a 2-member committee to facilitate the purchase of hospital equipment.
"The two members deliberately purchased sub-standard equipment from Nestor Pharma, which is not even a manufacturer, and ordered Leproscopic equipment for operation purposes. The two have caused loss of more than Rs 5 crore to the government of India besides threatening the lives of female patients," Mohanty said.
The raids are continuing.
