The Central Bureau of Investigation carried out nationwide raids at 60 places against senior government officials suspected of indulging in corrupt practices.
Lakhs of rupees in cash were recovered during the raids, which began in the wee hours, and were carried out after the agency completed its preliminary inquiry, CBI sources said in New Delhi.
Twenty-five cases have been registered so far, they said.
Raids were being carried out at six places in the national capital against Deputy Commissioner of Police (Supreme Court Security) A A Farooqui and Director (Finance), Urban Development Ministry, Sanjay Kumar Sah, an Income Tax Officer of the 1990 batch.
The sources claimed Rs one lakh in cash had been seized from Farooqui's residence, besides over one kg of gold.
Similarly, a case of possessing assets disproportionate to known sources of income was registered against an executive engineer, Bansi Lal, in Patna for allegedly amassing assets to the tune of over Rs 1.21 crore.
The CBI also claimed it had recovered cash of Rs 1.3 lakh from his residence. Bansi Lal also had a bank balance of Rs three lakh.
One person was arrested from North Delhi for allegedly selling fake stamps and letterheads of the CBI.
The CBI had earlier carried out a similar drive on February two, after which it had registered cases against 194 people and seized cash of over Rs one crore, besides detecting property worth Rs 10 crore.
In South India, the residences of two officials each in Chennai and Kochi, one official each in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Vishakapatnam were raided, sources said.
