CBI muddles up anti-terror training course for cops

The Central Bureau of Investigation's plans to organise a training programme for police officers, to be conducted by experts from Germany, has gone awry twice. The course was based on 'money laundering and financing of terrorism'.

The five-day course was scheduled to be held at the CBI academy in Ghaziabad in May and in December, but the training programme was cancelled as there were no trainers and no participants for the course.

Two officials from the German police's federal unit, the BKA, were expected to conduct the classes. But hours before boarding their flight to New Delhi, the two sleuths were requested to postpone their visit as the home ministry and the external affairs ministry had not yet given their approval for conducting the course.

Two Indian Police Service officers from each state were supposed to attend the course, which was scheduled to start from December 14, but the CBI failed to get a list of the attending officers.

The CBI has blamed the Bureau of Police Research and Development for the lapse, as it was supposed to collect the names of the IPS officers from the respective state governments and the home ministry.

According to a CBI spokesperson, the course may now be held in February, and the dates will be finalised after consultations with the German officers.

The CBI could not offer an explanation as to why it failed to inform the German investigators about the postponement of the course earlier.
