After the Mumbai police's biggest manhunt for a serial rapist and killer failed to give any results, the Maharashtra home department upped its ante against crime against women and children by announcing a cash reward for any information on the suspect's whereabouts.
The state government declared that any person giving information leading to the arrest of the Kurla rapist killer will be given a cash reward of Rs 2.5 lakh.
Home minister R R Patil hoped that the money would help the police solve the case faster. He, however, clarified that this should not be seen as a sign of helplessness of the police on not being able to solve the crime on its own.
"Criminals can't escape from the law for too long. The cops will eventually catch up with them. However, in this case, we want to crack the case faster, and hence we have announced the reward," said Patil.
Residents of Kurla, a Central Mumbai suburb, are facing sleepless nights after three incidents of young girls being raped and killed have occurred in the area, mostly in the Nehru Nagar area.
On Saturday, the cops recovered a badly decomposed body of a nine-year-old girl who had gone missing on June 6.
Interestingly, the state government has on previous occasions announced cash rewards to catch criminals, but that has been mostly for cases involving huge loss of lives like bomb blasts and other terror related incidents.
