Rizwanur committed suicide, says HC

February 28, 2008 13:01 IST

The Calcutta High Court  on Thursday held that computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rahman's death in September last was a suicide and not murder.

Justice Dipankar Dutta made the CBI report public during the proceedings. The Central Bureau of Investigation submitted the report on the mysterious death of Rizwanur Rahman, who married industrialist Ashok Todi's daughter Priyanka, before the high court last week.

In the report, the central agency accused three Kolkata Police officials -- Sukanti Chakraborty, Ajay Kumar and Krishnendu Das--of abetting the teacher to commit suicide. His body was recovered beside railway tracks in Patipukur near Dumdum on September 21, leading to largescale violence in Park Circus area that day.

The then Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee was also charged with abetment to suicide.

The investigating agency recommended

disciplinary action against him for his role in calling Rahman to Lalbazar, the police headquarters, and grilling him before his wife for a few days.

The CBI also accused Rizwanur's father-in-law and another relative Anil Sarogi of pushing him to commit suicide.

The agency suggested the court to issue an order to initiate criminal proceedings against Todi and Sarogi and the police officers.

The court will hold the main hearing of the case on March 5. Rahman had married Priyanka against her family's wishes.

Todi, an influential businessman, however, persuaded his daughter to leave Rizwanur and return to her parental home.

Rizwanur's family moved the high court suspecting that he was murdered and his body dumped beside the railway tracks.

The family prayed before the court for a CBI inquiry to uncover the mystery behind the death.
