Veteran Indian American journalist Brij Lal, who pioneered Hindi radio programmes in the United States in the early 1970s, has died.

He will be cremated on November 28, his family said. Brij Lal, who died of cancer on Sunday, started his journalistic career in Voice of America in 1960s and later shifted to ABC Nations Radio.

In 1974, he began a radio programme of his own 'Bharat Vani' that brought latest music and news to the Indian immigrant population in days when information from India was not readily available.

That accounted for the popularity of his weekly programme that was initially broadcast in New York metropolitan area and then progressively extended to include Washington DC and Toronto in Canada.

During his career spanning over 30 years, he had interviewed several Indian prime ministers as also world leaders. The Indian community recognised his services by conferring on him several awards.
