The darkest sins of mankind came alive in Sonari areas of Steel city Jamshedpur where a family left their son to die, locked in a room.

Last week, 17-year old Abhishek Das' father and step-mother left the house with their two daughters locking the mentally-challenged boy inside the room to face a slow and miserable death, police said.

The boy had gone into depression after his mother had reportedly committed suicide five years ago. K K Das, the boy's father, got married a second time three years ago and started neglecting the boy. His condition went from bad to worse with each passing day as he faced regular negligence, ill-treatment and humiliation.

The family members left the house all of a sudden a few days back without even informing the neighbours who took notice of the plight of the captivated boy as he started moaning in pain from starvation and thirst.

One of the neighbours informed the local police station and the boy was provided with food and water. The police, who visited the house on Monday, said a case had been lodged and efforts were on to locate the family
