Blame women also for getting raped, says NCP leader. BOO her!

Last updated on: January 29, 2014 13:06 IST

Nationalist Congress Party leader Asha Mirje has sparked a row with her controversial comment that women are also to be blamed for rape.

"Woman's clothes, her behaviour and her being at inappropriate places are also responsible for sexual assault," said Mirje, who is also a member of the Maharashtra Women's Commission.

At a party meet, she questioned why the Delhi student who was gang-raped on a moving bus in December, 2012, was out with her friend at night. She also commented on a photojournalist who was gang-raped at the abandoned Shakti Mills complex last year.

"Did Nirbhaya really have go to watch a movie at 11 in the night with her friend? Take the Shakti Mills gang-rape case. Why did the (survivor) go to such an isolated spot at 6 pm?" she asked while speaking at a gathering of her party's women workers in Nagpur on Tuesday.

Mirje’s sexist remarks come as a shocker, especially from a woman politician. A bigger shame is that she represents the women’s panel.

So go ahead and register your protest. BOO this NCP leader for her insensitive comments!
