After defeating the Congress in municipal corporation polls, Gujarat's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday maintained its winning streak in panchayat polls and the remaining civic body elections in Ahmedabad.

The counting for 24 district panchayats, 208 taluka panchayats and 53 municipalities was held on Saturday. Out of the 24 district panchayats, the BJP won clear majority in 21 while the Congress got majority in Gandhinagar and Tapi.

Out of the 208 taluka panchayats, results of 157 were declared, in which BJP won 122, Congress 20 and Janata Dal - United two. In the three taluka panchayats, the verdict was fractured. In the 53 municipalities, the BJP has won 42 seats while the Congress and other parties got four seats respectively.

In Porbandar, both the BJP and Congress won 21 seats each out of the total 42 seats. State Congress president Siddarth Patel resigned after the poll results, taking moral responsibility for the defeat.

He has sent his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi, party sources said.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally after his party's victory, said the results indicate that the BJP has been supported by poor people, Muslims and tribals.
