A Bharatiya Janata Party delegation led by party chief Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday met President Pratibha Patil demanding an inquiry into the alleged corruption, abuse of power and worsening law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh under Chief Minister Mayawati's rule.
"The situation in Uttar Pradesh is worsening day by day. We have asked the President to intervene and institute an independent and impartial inquiry into increasing lawlessness and corruption in the state. There is a complete breakdown of the constitutional machinery there," Gadkari said.
He was speaking to mediapersons after meeting Patil, along with senior party leaders Uma Bharti, Murli Manohar Joshi, Rajnath Singh, Kalraj Mishra and Vinay Katiyar.
The BJP alleged that "100 scams had taken place during the four years of Mayawati regime and the total worth of these scams is Rs 2,54,000 crore."
"The law and order in the state is bad. Dalits, women and the weaker sections are living in fear. The rape of Dalit women is on the rise," Gadkari said.
The BJP has raised its voice against the murder of Deputy CMO Y S Sachan in Lucknow jail and already demanded a CBI probe into the matter.
In a memorandum submitted to the President, the BJP alleged that despite strictures by UP Lokayukta and adverse remarks and recommendations of strong action by the Supreme Court, there has been little impact.
"The Bahujan Samaj Party government is indulging in abuse of power, acquiring land from farmers in the name of public purpose at cheaper rates and handing them over to big builders," Gadkari said, adding that there is "fear, hunger and corruption" everywhere in the state.
A documentary film Mayajal -- on the situation in UP -- is among the documents submitted by BJP to Patil.
