Taking a dig at his own party, Varun Gandhi, who has stayed away from campaigning in the Uttar Pradesh elections, has said the Bharatiya Janata Party was "spoilt for choice" and had 55 chief ministerial candidates.

Making a case for naming chief ministerial candidates, Varun, who represents Pilibit in the Lok Sabha, said "people vote for people" and not for symbols. "It is a human relationship...If you do not have one person your message gets diffused... But I think the BJP is one step ahead as it has 55 chief ministerial candidates," he told NDTV.

The young BJP MP was replying to a question whether it would have been better if the BJP or the Congress had named chief ministerial candidates in the ongoing UP elections.

The Congress had a "genuine problem" as it does not have a single state leader who has the stature, Varun said, adding that if the party named one person as the chief ministerial candidate there would be infighting.

Asked about the poll outcome, he said he did not think that the results would be "super magnificent" for the BJP.

The BJP will not get 250 seats but it will definitely better its performance from the 51 seats it won in 2007, Varun said.
