The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday reacted angrily to the Central Bureau of Investigation's second charge-sheet against five persons in the 2G scam, saying it is the 'first-ever' instance that a second charge-sheet has been submitted by the agency in a case.

"We strongly and angrily react to the charge-sheet... it is a first-ever instance in the history of the agency that it submitted a second charge-sheet in a case," BJP's national spokesperson Syed Shahnawj Hussain told reporters.

Speaking about the timing of the charge sheets-filed in the case, Hussain said the agency filed its first charge-sheet before the elections in Tamil Nadu after the name of "a member of an important political family" had figured in the case.

"Similarly, the CBI filed the second charge-sheet after the elections were over and named new persons of the family in the case," he said.

Referring to the questions raised about the integrity of some members of the civil society fighting for the Lokpal bill, the BJP MP said the statements by senior party leaders --  including Digvijay Singh, Salman Khurshid and Reeta Bahuguna Joshi over the issue --would not have been possible "without the confidence of the Congress high command".

"Congress is a party where nothing is done without the backing of the top leadership... nobody can make such statement without its permission," he alleged.

Strongly supporting the efforts being made for the drafting of an effective Lokpal Bill, Hussain said the BJP would make its stand clear and make suggestions on the draft once it comes up for debate in Parliament.

"The image of politics has been maligned due to the faulty policies of the Congress," he said, adding, "The situation has reached such a pass that political leaders are being embarrassed."

Alleging that the Congress was engaged in weakening the campaign against corruption, Hussain said Congress leaders had launched "a vilification campaign" against the opposition, particularly the BJP, when they had disallowed Parliament to function on the demand for a JPC probe into the 2G scam.

Recalling that Congress leaders had targeted the BJP, accusing it of "causing loss" by disrupting the proceedings of Parliament over the demand for a JPC, he said the Congress was raising the issue of loss due to the stalling of Parliament but was not bothered to probe a Rs 1.76 lakh crore scam.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had in Parliament proposed the names of the members of JPC; subsequently there was a consensus and the resolution to this effect was adopted unanimously, he claimed.

"Now certain objections are being raised about the inclusion of senior BJP leaders Yashwant and Yashwant Singh in the JPC," he said.

"When the House did not object to the inclusion of the two leaders, why is their inclusion in the JPC being opposed," Hussain queried and said the BJP would raise the issue at an appropriate level.
