Ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal legislator Azad Gandhi, wanted in connection with abduction of businessman Atul Prakash and illegal confinement of some policemen, on Tuesday surrendered before a lower court in Gaya.
A member of the state's legislative council, Gandhi is one of the three accused along with former Bihar minister Surendra Yadav and Pappu Yadav, also an MLC.
Chief Judicial Magistrate R K Singh, after rejecting Gandhi's bail petition, remanded him to 14 days judicial custody.
Prakash, a Patna-based businessman, had allegedly fled to Anand in Gujarat in the first week of April after duping some politicians of the ruling RJD.
In a bid to recover the money, Gandhi, who accompanied the police team returning from Gujarat after arresting Prakash, allegedly persuaded the policemen to alight at Gaya and took him to the residence of former minister of state for excise Surendra Yadav, where he was allegedly tortured for three consecutive days.
Sub-Inspector of Kotwali police station (in Patna) Ramakant Ram, now in jail for his alleged involvement in the incident, managed to contact the then Gaya Superintendent of Police Ravindran Shankaran on April 8 and narrate the entire incident.
This led to filing an FIR at the Rampur police station against the former minister, Azad Gandhi and Pappu Yadav.
Pappu Yadav is Chief Minister Rabri Devi's brother Subhash Yadav's brother-in-law.
Earlier on May 30, Surendra Yadav had surrendered before Chief Judicial Magistrate Ravindra Prasad Thakur.
