Laloo Prasad Yadav, chief of Bihar's ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal, on Friday assured mediapersons that Ashok Karn, abducted Hindustan Times photojournalist, would be rescued in the evening.

He and his wife, Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi, were addressing journalists gathered at their residence demanding the safe release of Karn.

The RJD chief said four Special Task Force teams, each headed by a deputy superintendent of police, were working round-the-clock to secure the release of Karn, who works for the Ranchi edition of the daily.

According to the police, around ten criminals abducted Karn on Thursday night from his Bela village in Nalanda district.

Following the arrest of one Shambhu Thakur, the police had gathered clues regarding the gang, Yadav said. But Nalanda police officials said they had no clues.

Madhu, wife of the photojournalist, said the abductors were demanding a ransom of one million rupees.

The journalists assembled at the local office of the Hindustan Times in the morning and marched to the chief minister's residence to submit a memorandum demanding Karn's release.

They later thronged in front of Raj Bhavan, where senior journalists decided to constitute an 11-member action panel to mount pressure on the government.

The journalists will also stage a dharna at the J P roundabout on Sunday and demonstrations will be held at the district headquarters on Monday.

This is the first time that such a large number of journalists have taken to the streets in and expressed their protest before Rabri Devi and Laloo Yadav at their residence.

Resident editor of Hindustan Times, Patna, N R Mohanty, cautioned saying, "We should not do anything to sensationalise the issue and put Karn's life in danger."
