Bihar Member of Legislative Assembly Zakir Anwar alias Zakir Mian was arrested in Nepal in connection with the kidnapping of a businessman, the police said on Saturday.

Lok Janshakti Party MLA Zakir Mian, as he is popularly known in Araria, was arrested at Jhapa town in Nepal on Friday in connection with the kidnapping of one Tulsiram Agrawal from Biratnagar a decade ago.

A senior police officer in Araria district has confirmed that Zakir Mian was arrested in Nepal.

An official in the state home department admitted that the Nepal police had informed it about Zakir's arrest.

According to police officials, Zakir was wanted by the Nepal police in connection with various criminal cases.

Agrawal, 40, is a Nepali businessman of Indian origin. He was abducted from Biratnagar -- the biggest industrial town in Nepal that is hardly five km from the border town of Jogbani in Araria district -- in January 2002.

Agrawal was released after a month-and-half by his abductors after his family members allegedly paid a ransom of Rs 5 crore.

A few months ago, the Nepal police had handed over a list of wanted criminals, including Zakir, to the Indian government.

Earlier, the Nepal police had arrested gangster Pappu Dev for the abduction of Agrawal and he is currently lodged in a jail in Nepal.

Zakir has been allegedly involved in several criminal activities in Araria.
