Sunder Singh Bhandari dead

June 22, 2005 09:32 IST

Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sundar Singh Bhandari died in sleep New Delhi early on Wednesday. Bhandari, 84, was ailing for quite some time, family sources said. He was a bachelor.

A founder member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Bhandari had occupied key positions in the party, including that of senior vice-president.

During the tenure of BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government, Bhandari was appointed Governor of Bihar and Gujarat.

BJP vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu, general secretary Sanjay Joshi and senior leaders, including Pyrelal Khandelwal, were among those who rushed to Bhandari's Kalkaji Extension residence in South Delhi on hearing the news.

Bhandari had recently hit the headlines when he charged the Narendra Modi government with delay in responding to the post-Godhra violence in Gujarat and demanded a thorough investigation to find the guilty. Later, however, he gave a clean chit to Modi but stuck to his demand for a probe.

A member of BJP National Council, Bhandari had not been taking active interest in party affairs of late.
