Noted Bengali writer Taradas Bandyopadhyay died on Sunday morning at his Barrackpur house, near Kolkata, after a prolonged illness, family sources said. He was 63.

Son of late legendary writer Bibhutibhusan Bandyopadhyay of 'Pather Panchali' fame, Taradas is survived by his wife and two sons.

He was a diabetic and suffered from chronic renal failure. A few years ago, he had undergone an open-heart surgery.
Taradas leaves behind a large number of short stories and two famous novels -- 'Taradas Tantrik' and 'Kajol'. 'Kajol' was a sequel to 'Aparajito' written by his father.

Taradas had his schooling at the Ramakrishna Mission School, Rahara. Graduating from Maulana Azad College with Honours in English, he went on to do his post-graduation from the Calcutta University.

He joined service with the West Bengal government and rose to the position of director in the Information and Cultural Affairs department, from where he took voluntary retirement.

Despite his failing health, Bandyopadhyay found time to associate with cultural and social organisations and remained the honorary vice-president of the Indian Forum of Art and Culture.
